The spirit of Helms College is unlike anything I've ever experienced before.
We are family here. That's one of the absolute favorite things I love about Helms College is that everybody is in this together. We all want everybody to win.
Edgar J. Helms's mission for Goodwill Industries was to help people discover their God given gifts through education, work, and career services.
Edgar Helms was actually a pastor and so his mission was to help the people that were less fortunate, of course, and to help people who didn't have employability skills. Here at Helms College, we are reaching for those same individuals.
He created a place where people could come and get a great education, and provide them with additional skills to make them more marketable.
With healthcare and health services, we usually get students who've always wanted to be in medicine and when they come here, it's like, "Oh, my God, I'm finally getting to do that!" Once we bring these students in, and we train them, we don't only want them to be successful at doing the skills correctly, going to work on time, we want them to also care about people.
I love the way that the school continues to focus on our careers outside of Helms giving us an opportunity to enter into the workforce for a brief period of time to get a feel of what it was like. That's something that I think is absolutely amazing.
I actually left a career that I was very comfortable in, I was just kind of going through the motions, but I wasn't fulfilled every day when I left. I really found that through Helms College, I found all of these different opportunities that I didn't even know were possible.
So if you're that person that's just kind of going through the motions, doesn't really know where to go from here, Helms College is a great place for you because you're not only going to get an education, you're gonna get a support system, you're gonna get motivators and mentors, and you're gonna get a staff that genuinely cares about you, and wants you to succeed.
